Copyright is simply the right to copy and hold the economic rights, including:

• Reproduction
• Distribution
• Make Derivatives
• Publicly Perform
• Publicly Display

Rights can be sold, hired (work made for hire), and allowed to be produced and licensed by the author. Copyright protection lasts the life of the last living author plus fifty (50) years.

​There are three (3) types of copyright work:

1. Work Made for Hire: when the work is authored by an employee and owned by the employer
2. Joint Ownership/Authorship: when the work is authored and owned by two or more entities
3. Authorship of Pseudonymous Works and Anonymous (Unsigned) Works: when the author of the work copyrights the work under a pseudonym or anonymously (e.g. J.K. Rowling and the Harry Potter series)

 Only human beings can create intellectual property; thus, no animal, machine, or institution can authorise a work to be copyrighted.
